Les Mousquetaires’ two grocery banners, Intermarché and Netto, posted sales gains last year. Across all markets (Belgium, France, Poland, Portugal), Intermarché and Netto’s turnover reached 37.8bn euros in 2020. In their home market of France, the two retailers saw their combined market share growing 0.7 pts to 15.7% after achieving sales of 33.9bn euros.
Intermarché’s turnover in France grew by 1.4% to 32.5bn euros, held back by weaker fuel sales. With shoppers choosing to shop local and visit large stores less during the pandemic, sales in the retailer’s Super (+1.2%) Hyper (-0.4%), and Contact (+1.4%) banners were not as strong as its Express convenience format which grew 22.8%. Netto’s discount offer proved popular with consumers and its turnover rose 7.3% to 1.4bn euros.
Intermarché ended the year with 2,369 stores (1,840 in France, 254 in Portugal, 197 in Poland, 78 in Belgium). Netto had 302 stores, all in France.
