Northeastern grocery chain Price Chopper/Market 32 announced plans to merge with Tops Markets. Scott Grimmett, CEO of Price Chopper/Market 32, will serve as CEO for the new merged company. Tops Chairman and CEO Frank Curci will serve on the combined company’s board and as a consultant to aid in the transition.
The new company will consist of 292 Price Chopper, Market 32, Market Bistro and Tops Markets stores in New York, Vermont, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and New Hampshire. It will have more than 30,000 employees and will be based in Schenectady, New York.
Price Chopper/Market 32 currently has 130 Price Chopper and Market 32 grocery stores and one Market Bistro in New York, Vermont, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and New Hampshire, while Tops Markets has 162 supermarkets in New York, Pennsylvania and Vermont. The merger now awaits regulatory approval and finalization of details.
