Amazon has unveiled a new suburban format for its cashier-free Amazon Go convenience stores, with the first two locations slated to open in Washington state and Los Angeles in the coming months.
The company is planning a 6,150-square-foot new concept Amazon Go in Mill Creek, Wash., with another Go store somewhere in metropolitan Los Angeles. Both stores are expected to be larger than its present Amazon Go stores, which are in various cities throughout the country, including New York, Chicago, and San Francisco. Presently, the average Amazon Go store ranges from 1,200 to 2,700 square feet.
Like current Amazon Go outlets, both stores will feature “Just Walk Out” technology, which enables customers to avoid waiting at the checkout line. The system uses overhead cameras, weight sensors and deep-learning technology to track customers items in their virtual cart.
“The store will feature the same Just Walk Out Shopping experience customers have come to appreciate from our other Amazon Go stores. When you’re done shopping, you’re good to go. No lines, no checkout,” Amazon stated.
The latest move is a continuation of Amazon’s expansion of its food and grocery physical-store footprint. In addition to the Amazon Go locations, the company has 23 Amazon Fresh full-size grocery stores, and has confirmed more Amazon Fresh store openings for California, Illinois, New Jersey, Virginia, and Washington. Last month Amazon announced it would be opening physical clothing stores in the months to come.
