Albert Heijn will be introducing a 100% plant-based and circular material PEF (polyethylene furanoate) bottle for its own brand fruit juice. The company wants to use this material for as much private label packaging as possible. The retailer is the first supermarket in the world to introduce PEF packaging for its own brand products. The PEF, produced by Avantium, is a 100% plant-based and fully recyclable polymer which can be used, amongst others, for bottles, packaging, and films. In addition to its sustainable packaging benefits, PEF has superior barrier properties, extending the shelf life of beverages and food. The planning is that the new packaging will be arriving in supermarkets by the middle of next year.
